Terms of Service
Effective October 10, 2026
These terms are an agreement between you and the operator of Footing ("we", "us"). By using the site or buying anything from us, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.
Who can use the site
You must be 18 or older. If you use the site for a business, you confirm you can agree to these terms for that business.
The service
Footing is free bookkeeping software that runs in your web browser. It records transactions using double-entry accounting, creates invoices and reports, imports bank files, and estimates federal taxes.
Purchases, renewals, cancellation, and refunds
Footing is free. We don't sell anything directly, so there's nothing to cancel or refund.
Prices are in US dollars and may not include taxes, which we'll add where required. We may change prices for future periods, and we'll tell you at least 30 days before a change affects a renewal, giving you time to cancel.
Acceptable use
Don't use the site to break the law, infringe others' rights, send spam, submit false information or someone else's details, try to access systems or data you're not authorized to, or interfere with how the site runs. We may suspend access for anyone who does.
What you send us
You keep ownership of anything you submit. You give us permission to use it only to provide and improve the service. You confirm you have the right to send it to us.
Our content
The site's design, text, code, and logos belong to us or our licensors. You may use the site for its intended purpose, but you may not copy, resell, or create a competing service from it.
Other services and links
The site links to or works with services we don't control, such as payment processors and stores. Their own terms and policies apply, and we aren't responsible for them.
Disclaimers
Footing is a record-keeping and calculation tool. It isn't a CPA firm, a tax preparer, a bank, or a payroll service, and it doesn't give tax, legal, or financial advice. Tax estimates use 2026 federal rules and the numbers you enter; they don't include state taxes or every situation. You're responsible for the accuracy of your books and your tax filings, and for keeping backups. Because your data is stored only on your device, we can't recover it if it's deleted or your device is lost.
Partner disclosure: some links are partner links, and we may earn a commission at no cost to you.
The site is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't promise the site will always be available or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we won't be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim relating to the site or these terms is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or $50. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you. Nothing here limits liability that can't be limited by law.
Indemnity
If your misuse of the site or breach of these terms causes a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim, including attorney's fees.
Disputes and governing law
If you have a problem, contact us first. We'll try to resolve it informally within 30 days. These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the state in which we are based, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that isn't resolved informally will be handled in the state or federal courts serving the county where we are based, and you and we agree to those courts' jurisdiction, except that either of us may bring a claim in small claims court where it qualifies. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the consumer protection laws of the state where you live.
Changes and ending these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it. For changes that affect paid plans, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice. You can stop using the site at any time.
General
If part of these terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies. Not enforcing a part isn't a waiver. You may not transfer these terms; we may transfer them with the business. These terms, the Privacy Policy, and any agreement you sign with us for paid services are the whole agreement between us about the site.
